The Knoxville Area Urban League is currently accepting applications for the Minority Scholarship Program in honor of Walter S E Hardy, M.D., one of the first African-American physicians in Knoxville.

“The scholarship program is an opportunity to recognize the legacy of Dr. Walter S E Hardy and encourage other minority students to follow his example by serving this community through a career in the health and wellness profession,” said President and CEO Phyllis Nichols. “It is encouraging to see the strong and diverse field of candidates who apply for the scholarship program each year.”

The Urban League grants scholarships, starting at $1,000, to area minority college students who are pursuing degrees in health professions. To be eligible for the award, students must live in Knox, Anderson or Blount counties and be a full-time undergraduate student already accepted in a health-related degree program at an accredited college or university. Applications are due by Friday, Oct. 4.

Selection is based on a combination of factors, including GPA, academic progress, an essay, letters of recommendation, financial need, work history and school activities. Special emphasis will be placed on each applicant’s character, personal merit, background and past academic performance. Recipients will be selected by the Scholarship Committee, which is made up of members from the KAUL’s Board of Directors and Young Professionals.

Scholarship awards will be announced at the Knoxville Area Urban League Equal Opportunities Awards Gala on Thursday, Oct. 24.
