UScellular has announced the three winners of its Seventh Annual Black History Month Art Contest that was held in conjunction with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley in recognition of influential Black icons in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Public voting for the finalists’ artwork was available online, and the winning artists earned gift cards during a celebration at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley in the following amounts:

  • Alina Fominykh, $250, first place
  • Keith Seay, $150, second place
  • Roman Staples, $100, third place

This year, UScellular introduced a new element to the contest with Boys & Girls Club members encouraged to create original pieces of artwork in recognition of STEM icons, including historical figures, world leaders, scientists and educators. Representatives from the Boys & Girls Clubs and local UScellular leaders chose 10 finalists based on creativity, quality, interpretation, clarity of theme and overall impression. Public voting for the finalists was made available online throughout the month of February. In addition, the finalists’ artwork was digitally displayed in select stores.

First place recipient Alina Fominy (13) shows winning portrait of astronaut Mae C. Jemison.

“It was amazing to see the creativity and wide range of inspirations the club members used to create their art,” said Thomas White, director of sales for East Tennessee at UScellular. “We’re thrilled to be able to team with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley to celebrate Black History Month and to highlight the STEM achievements of these Black icons. We extend our appreciation for all the submissions and congratulate our winners.”
