Tennessee College of Applied Technology Director Jerry Patton thanks US Nitrogen Construction Manager Victor Smith for the donation Aug. 6 of more than $20,000 of steel and metal piping to be used for training the college’s diverse student base. The metal will be used for the welding program and new pipe-fitting class that will start in 2015.
The US Nitrogen construction team donated a tractor-trailer full of piping and steel from the construction of its state-of-the-art facility in Greene County to the Tennessee College of Applied Technology Morristown on Wednesday, August 6.
“At US Nitrogen, we have a very high standard for materials used in our construction site, and a strict inspection process,” said US Nitrogen Construction Manager Victor Smith. “The donated materials, while not suitable to be used in our facility, are perfect for students to practice skills. We had several employees who have completed classes at Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Morristown, and we knew the program had a need for the material.”
The piping and steel is valued at approximately $20,000 and will be used in current and upcoming classes of TCAT’s welding program. The piping will also be used for a new pipe fitting program that will begin in 2015. The materials will benefit TCAT’s diverse student population of traditional full-time trade students, employees of companies completing continuing education and part-time students in night classes.
“This is going to be a great help to us as we start up our new pipe-fitting program next year,” said TCAT-Morristown Director Jerry Patton. “Metal to train with is a very expensive item, and without this generous donation, we would have had to take this large expense out of our operating budget. We are very grateful to US Nitrogen for this donation that will greatly benefit our students.”
TCAT-Morristown is one of 27 Colleges of Applied Technology located throughout Tennessee and is governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents. Training is provided for entry-level employment in business and industry at TCAT campuses across the state. The new term begins Sept. 1.
