The ability to drive helps senior citizens stay mobile and independent, but the risk of being involved in a motor vehicle accident increases with age. An average of 500 older adults are injured every day in crashes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
To ensure Knoxville’s senior drivers are as safe as possible, the Knoxville Area Urban League’s Project Ready program is providing CarFit checkups on Saturday, Nov. 16, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Urban League office, 1514 E. Fifth Ave.
CarFit is an educational program in which seniors answer straight forward questions and complete a 13-point checklist about the vehicle with a volunteer. The process takes about 20 minutes, and participants leave with recommended car adjustments, a list of resources to keep them on the road safely and greater peace of mind.
“This opportunity is a win-win for young people and the senior citizens in our community,” said Knoxville Area Urban League CEO Phyllis Nichols. “Through their participation in the service learning project our Project Ready students obtain team-building and leadership skills and seniors benefit by having access to a program that provides greater comfort and control of their vehicles.”
Project Ready is an innovative and unique college access program that provides a comprehensive, research-based approach to preparing young people and families for the challenges and promise of higher education. It is comprised of three components: academic development, social development and cultural and global awareness.

CarFit was developed by the American Society on Aging in collaboration with AAA, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association.
