The Christman Company to build Southwestern Community College health sciences building

June 1, 2019

The Christman Company has been awarded a $17.6 million contract to build Southwestern Community College’s (SCC) new 55,000-square-foot health sciences building in Sylva, North Carolina.

The college, located in Jackson County in Western North Carolina, is about 50 miles from the Tennessee side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and borders the Blue Ridge Parkway. Groundbreaking for the three-story building occurred in May, and the project is expected to be completed in 2021.

“This is a unique and challenging building as it will be constructed between two existing buildings in the heart of the Smoky Mountains,” said Marty Gibbs, vice president and general manager for Christman’s Knoxville operations. “We are grateful for this opportunity and look forward to making sure Southwestern Community College has a beautiful, functional and modern new building to showcase its health sciences programs.”

The new building will house simulation labs, classrooms and support spaces for many of the college’s health sciences programs including Nursing, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Emergency Medical Science (EMS), Medical Sonography and Radiography. The college has quadrupled its healthcare programs since opening its current health sciences building in 1988 and needs to expand.

“We’re excited to get started, and we’re even more excited about what this building will mean for our students and the entire community in the years ahead,” said Dr. Don Tomas, SCC’s president. “Healthcare providers throughout our region anticipate a significant number of job openings in the near future, and this building will allow us to train the professionals who can fill those positions. The economic impact will be tremendous.”

The Christman Company has considerable experience in the field of higher education, including an award this year to demolish and rebuild the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture’s (UTIA) Ellington Plant Sciences building. The two-phase project will result in a combined 180,000-square-foot facility. Christman’s other University of Tennessee projects include the recently opened $187 million, 390,000-square-foot UT Student Union, and Ken and Blaire Mossman Building, a $96 million, 250,000-square-foot science facility and the ongoing UT West Campus Housing Development, a $63 million, village-style complex.
