Students to perform Knoxville Symphony Orchestra Youth Orchestra Association spring concert

April 29, 2016

On Monday, May 2 at 7 p.m. at the Tennessee Theatre, 325 students will perform the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Association Spring Concert. This concert is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by First Tennessee Foundation.

This free concert will feature performances from all five of the orchestras in the Association: Preludium, Philharmonia, Sinfonia, Youth Chamber Orchestra and the Youth Orchestra.  The 32 graduating seniors will be recognized at this concert.

  • The concert will open with the Preludium Orchestra (featuring beginning string players) under the baton of Erin Archer performing Bach’s “A Bach Fest,” Balmages “Beethoven Lullaby” and Monday’s “Fiddlin’ With The Classics.”
  • The Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Nina Mikos, includes string players with limited orchestral experience. They will perform Balmages’ “Wood Splitter Fanfare,” Yamada’s “Kazoku,” and Percy Hall’s “Appalachian Reflections.”
  • The Sinfonia Orchestra consists of string players with at least three years of instrument experience. Led by Association Manager Kathy Hart, they will take the stage with an arrangement of Figaro March from The Marriage of Figaro, an arrangement of Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes,” and a Richard Meyer piece entitled “Steampunk.”
  • The Youth Chamber Orchestra, which consists of intermediate string players, is under the direction of Dr. Wesley Baldwin, professor of cello at the University of Tennessee. These students will perform selections from the Don Quixote Suite by Georg P. Telemann.
  • The Association’s top group, the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra, is a full symphonic orchestra led by Music Director James Fellenbaum. They will conclude the evening with Gliere’s “The Red Poppy,” the Nocturne movement from Georges Bizet’s Carmen Suite No. 2, and Music from Star Wars by John Williams.
