Springtime in East Tennessee brings sunshine, Dogwood blooms, outdoor events – and, sadly, many homeless puppies.
“Starting in the spring, the shelter usually receives an influx of puppies in need of homes,” said Young-Williams Animal Center CEO Jeff Ashin. “It’s the start of mating season for dogs and cats, and unfortunately, many people have not spayed or neutered their pets and end up with litters of animals that they cannot care for. That’s when they come to us.”
The shelter is currently “filled to capacity,” said Ashin, with adoptable dogs and puppies. In hopes of increasing adoptions and clearing shelter space desperately needed for the daily intake of stray, surrendered and unwanted animals, Young-Williams is reducing fees for all dog adoptions.
Now through Sunday, April 14, Young-Williams Animal Center is offering $50 off the adoption fee for all puppies and $25 off the adoption fee for all adult dogs.
That brings the adoption fees down to $100 for puppies and $50 for adult dogs. Adoption fees for dogs include a veterinary physical exam, spay/neuter surgery, DAPP and Kennel Cough vaccinations, heartworm test and one month of heartworm prevention, standard deworming, one month of flea prevention, nail trim and ear cleaning, and a microchip with registration. The value of these services for an adult dog could cost a pet owner more than $600 through private veterinarian offices.
“That’s just one reason that pet adoption is the best option,” Ashin said. “The medical services provided save pet owners hundreds of dollars out-of-pocket up front. And with reduced adoption fees, we’re hoping to make it even easier for families in the Knoxville area to ‘spring’ into pet adoption.”
