South College to ‘kick it’ with free community health screening in Alcoa

May 10, 2018

The South College School of Pharmacy will provide a free community health screening in Alcoa on Saturday, May 12, as part of stroke awareness month.

The “Kick-it Annual Community Health Fair” will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on the practice field at Alcoa Elementary School on 1200 Springbrook Road.

The fair will offer health education courses on blood pressure, blood sugar and stroke awareness, along with the administration of blood pressure and blood glucose tests. Activities will be provided for children, including face painting.

Attendees also can enjoy watching a friendly competition as School of Pharmacy students will participate in a kickball tournament.

“A public health fair has a twofold benefit,” South College School of Pharmacy Dean Walter L. Fitzgerald Jr. said. “Our students get practical experience in their chosen field of providing health care to communities, and the public will have the chance for free health screenings at a fun event.”

Without proper monitoring, high glucose levels and high blood pressure can damage blood vessels, which can lead to stroke. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stroke is a leading cause of death in the United States, killing more than 140,000 Americans each year, accounting for one of every 20 deaths.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month, and the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association encourage proper screening, stroke prevention and healthy lifestyle adjustments.
