Candidate Status Moves School Closer to Full Accreditation

SouthCollegeSchoolofPharmacy300_0387029352804The School of Pharmacy at South College announced today that it has been granted Candidate status by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). Granting of Candidate status was based on the results of a comprehensive, on-site evaluation of the School of Pharmacy conducted in November 2012.

“Achieving this accreditation status is a testament to the hard work of the faculty and staff of the School of Pharmacy,” said Dr. Walter Fitzgerald, the founding Dean of the School of Pharmacy “This includes the many pharmacists in the greater Knoxville area who contribute to student education and clinical training. We are all dedicated to the goal of preparing students to make a positive contribution to the quality of health care received by their patients. Granting of Candidate status shows that we are on the right path to achieving this goal.”

Candidate status provides graduates with the same rights and privileges as graduates of a fully accredited program. It is the next step in the process toward full accreditation. With this approval, South College School of Pharmacy will be able to apply on time for granting of full accreditation in 2015.

As part of the evaluation process, the ACPE evaluation team met with several current students in the School of Pharmacy in November.

“We appreciate these students entrusting South College with their academic preparation to be pharmacists,” said Fitzgerald. “The students are enthusiastic about their education and they look forward to taking their place as an essential member of the health care team.”

The School of Pharmacy, an accelerated three-year program unique to pharmacy education in Tennessee, began its inaugural class in February 2012 and admitted its second class in July 2012. The next class is enrolling now and will begin in June 2013.

The first doctorate degree offered at South College, the PharmD degree enables graduates to apply for licensure as a pharmacist.

South College is a private institution accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to offer programs at the doctorate, masters, baccalaureate, and associate levels.
