South College recently celebrated Military Appreciation Day at the Parkside Learning Site with a breakfast, service dog demonstration and the opportunity to write letters to deployed military members. In addition, President Stephen South provided Smoky Mountain Service Dogs a check for $10,000.
“It is inspiring to see so many people come out and support our military,” South College President Stephen South said. “We wanted to honor our veterans and active duty personnel with a special appreciation day. South College is a designated military friendly institution and is committed to the success of our students.”

U.S. Rep. John J. Duncan, Jr., presented two U.S. flags from his office to Air Force veterans Billy and Kristina Marshall.
Smoky Mountain Service Dogs board member Jim Goyert and community events leader Laurie Birt shared the organization’s mission to enhance the quality of life for veterans by providing custom-trained service dogs at no cost. Hooligan, a canine ambassador, demonstrated some tasks that service dogs learn before going home with a veteran.
Billy Marshall, a graduate of the Smoky Mountain Service Dogs program, thanked the organization for the impact it had on the couple’s life by providing his service dog, Lucy.
Hannah Rowland, a health science student at South College, opened the event by singing the national anthem, and the Karns High School Air Force Junior ROTC (AFJROTC) served as color guard.
Community members and veterans attended and enjoyed breakfast served by Tennessee Promise students at South College, campus tours at the Parkside Learning Site and the opportunity to write letters of support to deployed members of the military.
