South College Physician Assistant program expands to Atlanta

August 29, 2019

The South College Physician Assistant program has expanded to include the college’s Atlanta campus.

Admitted students in Atlanta will be part of the college’s Knoxville, Tennessee, program, which started more than a decade ago. When classes start on Sept. 27, the inaugural Atlanta class will have 40 students representing 15 different states.

Admission is ongoing for the second class to start in the fall of 2020, which will expand to 60 new students. The Atlanta campus, located at 2600 Century Parkway NE, is expected to accommodate 85 new students in the program starting in its third year.

“One of the driving forces of the South College Physician Assistant program is to provide rural and underserved communities with PAs who will provide excellent primary care,” said Steve South, chancellor of South College. “We’ve improved and grown the program over 12 years in Knoxville and are thrilled to now offer this for the communities in and around Atlanta.”

The program has earned accreditation from the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA) for its master’s level program in Physician Assistant Studies. The commission is the accrediting agency that protects the interests of the public and physician assistant profession by defining standards for education and evaluating programs in the United States to ensure compliance with those standards. South College also offers an accredited Master of Health Science in Physician Assistant Studies program at its Nashville, Tennessee, campus.

“It’s been such a joy to see the evolution of this program,” said Dr. Don Yager, Associate Dean and Program Director of the School of Physician Assistant Studies for both Knoxville and Atlanta. “Our passionate faculty members are ready to prepare students who are well trained, clinically prepared for rotations, and adept at taking care of patients.”
