South College offers transition assistance to students of closing Hiwassee College

April 2, 2019

South College will offer transfer assistance to students affected by the shuttering of Hiwassee College, which announced that it would close its campus in Madisonville, Tennessee, effective May 10.

South College will be available for students needing information about enrollment and degree programs offered at its campuses in Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina, including the newly launched dental hygiene program in Nashville.

Hiwassee College, which was founded in 1849, is closing because of financial reasons. The college has a current enrollment of 225 students with 33 students scheduled to graduate this May.

“We understand that students affected by this closure will need to continue to pursue a college degree and stay on track to reach their educational goals,” South College Chancellor Steve South said. “We want to help these students in any way that we can to minimize disruption in their academic journeys.”

South College provides degree programs in comparable areas for Hiwassee College students, including business and dental hygiene. South College also offers a host of other degree programs in health care, dental assisting, information technology, business administration and education fields.

Students interested in the dental hygiene, health sciences and business programs at the Nashville campus may contact 629-802-3000.

Students interested in business and health sciences programs at the Knoxville campus may contact 865-251-1800.

South College, which is based in Knoxville, Tennessee, also has campuses in Asheville, North Carolina, and Atlanta, Georgia, and offers degree programs online.

“We will be available to offer assistance with admission, enrollment and the transfer process,” South said. “Financial aid officers also can help determine the level of eligibility for offered programs. We will make the transition as seamless as possible for students interested in completing degrees at South College.”

South College is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and offers programs at the doctorate, educational specialist, master’s, baccalaureate and associate levels.
