South College Nashville adds Medical Assisting programs

February 4, 2018

South College Nashville will now offer students the opportunity to pursue a Certificate in Medical Assisting or an Associate of Science in Medical Assisting, a fast-growing career track in the health care industry.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, careers in medical assisting will grow 23 percent between 2014 and 2024.

“We are always seeking to add programs that will prepare our students for jobs that are in high demand,” said Nick South, executive director of South College Nashville. “There is a rapidly growing need for medical assistants in the workforce, so offering this program at our Nashville location is a natural fit.”

Students traditionally begin participating in the certificate program that prepares them to take the Certified Medical Assistant exam. The program pairs classroom instruction with on-the-job clinical observation and experience, providing complementary academic and practical coursework.

Students who complete the one-year certificate program can then participate in the South College 1 + 1 program, which allows students to continue their education for an additional three to four quarters to complete the general education requirement and earn an Associate of Science in Medical Assisting.  This additional training is provided to expand career options and possible earning potential.
