School of Pharmacy demonstrates pharmacists’ role in health care

South College School of Pharmacy students are immersed in learning about prescription medications, but they also promote wellness in hopes of preventing diseases that cause the public to have to visit them.

“It is just as important for our students help the public understand how to prevent diseases as it is for them to be able to fill prescriptions to help treat them,” said Walter Fitzgerald, dean of the South College School of Pharmacy.

On Saturday, March 1, the South College School of Pharmacy, with the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP), will host its first annual community health fair in Knoxville at the Hardin Valley Church of Christ, 11515 Hardin Valley Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“This free event will be comprised of booths providing information about various health topics, such as diabetes assessment, hypertension, allergies and asthma, immunizations, and more,” Fitzgerald said. “The Knoxville Police Department will also be onsite with a K-9 unit, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will have a mobile methamphetamine laboratory onsite, too.”

Event sponsors include Allergy, Asthma & Sinus Center; APhA-ASP; Hardin Valley Church of Christ; Karns Volunteer Fire Department; Knoxville Police Department; Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Walgreens.

The School of Pharmacy is the first doctorate degree program at South College. South College offers an accelerated, three-year curriculum unique to pharmacy education in Tennessee. The PharmD degree enables graduates to apply for licensure as a pharmacist.
