South College expands Associate of Science in Teaching program

December 14, 2020

South College is expanding its Associate of Science in Teaching (AST) program to students across the state of Tennessee through its online platform.

Enrollment is open for qualified students to join the first class, which begins Jan. 13, 2021, and can be completed in two years.

“By expanding our Associate of Science in Teaching program to prospective students statewide, we’re providing a flexible foundation,” South College Chancellor Steve South said. “Students may enter the workforce as aides or assistants upon completing the program or build upon this degree, which provides an excellent foundation to pursuing a bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate.”

The program is eligible for the Tennessee Promise Scholarship program, a last-dollar scholarship that covers tuition and fees not covered by other means of financial aid. The AST program is designed for students who have compassion and desire to work with children and help them learn. The program is headed by Dr. Michelle England, Dean of the School of Education.

“All of our instructors have real world classroom experience, and we want to provide that level of insight to our Associate of Science in Teaching students,” England said. “We expose students to proven strategies, practices, technologies, and scenarios pertinent in today’s classrooms. The online format provides flexibility for working students and busy schedules.”
