Messer Construction Co. has promoted John Blum to operations vice president in its Knoxville region office.

Blum started with Messer in 1996 as a co-op while studying at the University of Cincinnati and joined the company full-time in 2000 upon receiving his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He transferred to the Knoxville office in 2009.

Blum’s project experience includes several high-profile Messer projects in both Cincinnati and Knoxville. His Tennessee projects include the nearly $14 million Scripps Networks Technology and Data Center, the $14 million Carter Elementary School and the $38 million Clayton Center for the Arts at Maryville College.

Blum also has key roles in both the $114 million renovation of the University of Tennessee’s Strong Hall science and laboratory building and the $234 million UT West Campus Redevelopment project. The latter is the replacement of the campus’ Presidential Court complex with new residence and dining halls and is the largest individual project awarded in UT’s history.

“John continues to prove himself as a tremendous leader and an important member of our team,” said Allen Begley, senior vice president at Messer. “He adds value to our company both tangibly and intangibly, and his high standards for performance are reflected in the outstanding work he does for our clients.

Blum is a board member for Rebuilding Together Knoxville, a local chapter of the national organization that provides free rehabilitation and critical repairs, including disability accommodations, to the homes of low-income residents. In 2015, he was recognized by the Greater Knoxville Business Journal as one of its “40 under 40” rising stars in the region.

Blum resides in Concord with wife Lisa and their children, Nick, Madeline and Vincent.
