In just four weeks, the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra will kick off its 79th season with Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1. Maestro Lucas Richman conducts the Orchestra, joined by guest artist Jon Kimura Parker for a spectacular season opener. The concert will take place on Thursday, September 18 and Friday, September 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Tennessee Theatre. These performances are sponsored by Twin City Dealerships.
As announced last September, Lucas Richman will conclude his tenure with the KSO following the 2014-2015 symphony season. The KSO is thrilled to celebrate 12 wonderful years with the Maestro, starting Sept. 18. Musical selections for these concerts include Torke’s Bright Blue Music, Hindemith’s Symphonic Metamorphosis, and Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 featuring renowned pianist Jon Kimura Parker.
Jon Kimura Parker
Renowned pianist Jon Kimura Parker recently appeared as soloist with the major orchestras of Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, and toured the United States with Bramwell Tovey and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. A committed educator, Parker is Professor of Piano at The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. He has lectured at The Juilliard School, The Steans Institute, New York University, and Yale University. Mr. Parker is also Artistic Advisor of the Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival, where he has given world premieres of new works by Peter Schickele and Jake Heggie. View full bio here.
Patrons can attend pre-concert chats at 6:30 p.m. in the concert hall before each performance. Guest performers will offer their personal perspective and audience members will have a chance for Q&A with the artists. This is a unique get-to-know-you opportunity! There will be a very special Opening Night champagne toast in the Tennessee Theatre lobby at 7:00 p.m. All patrons are invited to enjoy complimentary champagne and celebrate the new KSO season with the Maestro!

The KSO has contributed to the cultural life in East Tennessee since 1935. Under the leadership of Lucas Richman, the orchestra consists of 75 professional musicians and performs more than 250 programs throughout East Tennessee each season. Performing in traditional venues such as the Tennessee Theatre, Bijou Theatre and the Civic Auditorium, and in non-traditional places like hospitals, school classrooms, nursing homes, city parks and churches, the KSO reaches more than 200,000 people throughout the region each year.
