Tarpley400John Tarpley, attorney with Lewis, King, Krieg & Waldrop, PC, has been named chair of the ABA Journal’s Board of Editors. Currently a member of the board, Tarpley was elected to the chair position by the American Bar Association’s Board of Governors at its February meeting and will assume the leadership role in June.

The ABA Journal is a monthly legal trade magazine and the flagship publication of the American Bar Association. Covering the news and trends of the legal profession, the publication is read by half of the nation’s 1 million lawyers each month.

“We are pleased to appoint John as the chair of the Board of Editors,” said ABA Journal Editor and Publisher Allen Pusey. “He has been an active member of the board and has always shown great leadership. I am confident he will continue to lead us in the right direction.”

The ABA Journal Board of Editors manages the publication and its financial affairs.

“John is a great lawyer and, interestingly, has experience as a journalist,” said Lisa Ramsay Cole, president/managing shareholder of Lewis King. “He will represent our firm well in this role that can impact our profession.”

Tarpley, a graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law, is a shareholder in the firm and represents clients from Lewis King’s Nashville office. He focuses his practice in the areas of tort, product and professional liability, commercial law and casualty defense. A certified Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 31 mediator, he has recently devoted a significant portion of his practice to the mediation and arbitration of civil matters.

Prior to joining the Lewis King in 1989, Tarpley was a judicial clerk for the Tennessee Court of Appeals, Middle Division, from 1981 to 1982, and an assistant attorney general for the State of Tennessee from 1982 to 1989. He is a former president of the Tennessee Bar Association (TBA) and has served on the TBA’s executive committee. As president of the TBA, he implemented the successful Leadership Law program and continues to be involved in its programming. He also established Lawyers Care, successfully recruiting lawyers to do more pro bono work in the state.

Tarpley has served as the chair of the ABA Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section (TIPS). He was the first editor of the group’s periodical, TortSource, and was the chairperson of the committee that created the successful TIPS Leadership Academy. A strong community supporter, he also serves on the board of directors of the Music City Chapter of the March of Dimes.

Lewis King was founded in 1960 and today has 58 attorneys in its three offices in Nashville, Knoxville and Sevierville.
