Following a successful collaboration in 2017, the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra will once again feature violinist Paul Huang in the upcoming Moxley Carmichael Masterworks Series concert, “Symphonie Fantastique.”
The concerts will take place at the Tennessee Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 21-22 led by KSO Music Director Aram Demirjian. Tickets can be purchased through the KSO box office at 865-291-3310 or online at knoxvillesymphony.com.
“It’s a great pleasure to be back in Knoxville and to be with the wonderful Knoxville Symphony,” Huang said. “I remember fondly my last visit with the orchestra performing the Beethoven Concerto, and I’m very excited to be able to bring another favorite of mine, the Bruch G minor concerto, to the audiences of Knoxville.”
Huang will be featured in Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1, one of the most-performed pieces in the classical violin repertoire. The evening will culminate with Hector Berlioz’s powerful and evocative “Symphonie Fantastique.” A five-movement work showcasing the pain of an artist’s unrequited love, “Symphonie Fantastique” was described by Leonard Bernstein as “the first psychedelic symphony in history.” The KSO will also perform “Sin Fronteras” (Without Borders) composed by Latin Grammy nominee Clarice Assad.
A rising performing artist described by The Nouvelliste as someone who shows “a precocious and magical talent,” Huang has garnered critical acclaim throughout his performing career. His accolades include the prestigious 2015 Avery Fisher Career Grant and the 2017 Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists. Huang also has appeared with other orchestras, including the Detroit Symphony, Houston Symphony and Baltimore Symphony.
The Tennessee Theatre’s latest COVID-19 safety protocols for concert attendance require audience members, staff and musicians to provide proof of complete COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result administered within 72 hours prior to the performance. Masks will be required regardless of vaccination status at all times except while eating and drinking.
