The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra Moxley Carmichael Masterworks Series presents “AN AMERICAN IN PARIS” on October 17-18. Maestro Lucas Richman conducts the Orchestra joined by guest pianist Jeffrey Biegel. The concert will take place on Thursday, October 17 and Friday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Tennessee Theatre. These performances are sponsored by Thermal Label Warehouse.
Musical selections include Barber’s Overture to The School for Scandal, Grofe’s Mississippi Suite, Gershwin’s An American in Paris, and an original work from Lucas Richman: Concerto for Piano & Orchestra: In Truth. This is the world premiere of Maestro Richman’s concerto, commissioned by the KSO, and will feature guest pianist Jeffrey Biegel. Biegel returns to Knoxville following his performance in February 2011 of William Bolcom’s “Prometheus”.
Jeffrey Biegel has created a multi-faceted career as a pianist, recording artist, composer and arranger. Until the age of three, Mr. Biegel could neither hear nor speak until corrected by surgery. Highlights of recent performances include two world premieres with the Pacific Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Carl St. Clair: Richard Danielpour’s ‘Mirrors for Piano and Orchestra, and William Bolcom’s ‘Prometheus for Piano, Orchestra and Chorus’, and a global webcast with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Leonard Slatkin conducting, in Beethoven’s “Choral Fantasy” and William Bolcom’s “Prometheus”.
“The Concerto for Piano & Orchestra is subtitled, ‘In Truth,’ ” says Lucas Richman, KSO Music Director.” The three movements are entitled, “To Oneself,” “To One’s World,” and “To One’s Spirit,” and all three reflect upon truths perceived, truths accepted and truths verified. The word “truth” in English and its Hebrew translation, “emet,” become melodies which run through the entire concerto. I was thrilled to write this for Jeffrey Biegel, who will be performing the world premiere of this concerto with the KSO; he has been a major inspiration for numerous American composers to write in this medium, due to the great depth of his talent, musicianship and soul.”
Patrons can attend pre-concert chats at 6:30 p.m. in the concert hall before each performance. Guest performers will offer their personal perspective and audience members will have a chance for Q&A with the artists. This is a unique get-to-know-you opportunity!
