The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra Chamber Classics Series continues with Orchestra Soloists on January 11. Maestro Lucas Richman conducts the Chamber Orchestra featuring solos by Principal Trumpet Phillip Chase Hawkins and KSO Principal Bassoon Aaron Apaza. The concert will take place on Sunday, January 11 at 2:30 p.m. at the Bijou Theatre. This performance is sponsored by DeRoyal, with support from the Aslan Foundation.

Musical selections include Stamitz/Holzbogen’s Trumpet Concerto in D Major and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto, two works which call for an accomplished soloist on the trumpet and bassoon. The program will conclude with Richard Strauss’ Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. Originally intended as prologue to a chamber opera, Strauss revised the piece and created a concert Suite for Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme in nine parts. The Suite, containing some of Strauss’s most charming music, was a favorite of the composer’s, and continues to maintain an important place in the concert hall.
This program features solos by two KSO musicians: Phillip Chase Hawkins and Aaron Apaza. Phillip Chase Hawkins joined the KSO as Principal Trumpet in 2013. A versatile performer on the modern trumpet, baroque trumpet, and other historical instruments, Chase also holds the position of Adjunct Professor of Trumpet at Centre College in Danville, KY. Aaron Apaza joined the KSO as Principal Bassoon in 2013, after serving as Acting Assistant Principal bassoon with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in 2011-2012. Aaron has held positions with the New World Symphony and Colorado Symphony, and has played with the Philadelphia Orchestra, The Baltimore Symphony, and the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia.

The KSO has contributed to the cultural life in East Tennessee since 1935. Under the leadership of Lucas Richman, the orchestra consists of 75 professional musicians and performs more than 250 programs throughout East Tennessee each season. Performing in traditional venues such as the Tennessee Theatre, Bijou Theatre and the Civic Auditorium, and in non-traditional places like hospitals, school classrooms, nursing homes, city parks and churches, the KSO reaches more than 200,000 people throughout the region each year.
