The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra will join the Hardin Valley Academy Orchestral Program for a “Side-by-Side” educational concert. Maestro James Fellenbaum will conduct both groups in several pieces including music of Respighi, Mendelssohn and Beethoven. The joint performance is free and open to the public and will take place Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hardin Valley Academy Auditorium. No tickets are required.

Who: Thirteen KSO string musicians will rehearse and perform side-by-side with 26 Hardin Valley Academy (HVA) students of various skill levels. The KSO partners on a rotating basis with Knox County high schools that feature an orchestral program and strives to perform with each program every three to four years. The HVA Orchestra is conducted by Peggy Jones.

What: The Side-by-Side concerts are unique because they are the only chance for high school orchestral students to play in concert with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. The students will gain advanced ensemble skills such as listening across the orchestra and learning to work better as a musical “team,” and they will have the opportunity to increase their technical skills and to reevaluate their musical goals with the aid of a professional musician.

Musical selections for this performance include Ancient Dances and Airs by Ottorino Respighi, Of Glorious Plumage by Richard Meyer, Sinfonia No. 2 in D Major by Felix Mendelssohn, Symphony No. 7 in A Major by Ludwig van Beethoven, Strut by Michael Daugherty and October by Eric Whitacre.

This concert is made possible by Side-by-Side sponsor Sandra Powell Emond.

When: Tuesday, April 29 at 7:00 PM

Where: Hardin Valley Academy Auditorium, 11345 Hardin Valley Rd, Knoxville, TN 37932
