Knoxville Recovers has released a short video asking East Tennesseans to adopt and promote health and safety precautions this Thanksgiving to help curb the spread of COVID-19.
The video serves as a public service announcement (PSA) and has been shared on social media, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The video also can be viewed and shared from YouTube: https://youtu.be/orOYcbZSDEQ.
Knoxville Recovers is an 11-member group of local leaders committed to helping the community recover both health-wise and economically from COVID-19. Representatives of the alliance featured in the video include Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon, Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs, State Sen. Dr. Richard Briggs and University of Tennessee-Knoxville Chancellor Donde Plowman.
The PSA messages are simple, easy to follow and align with COVID-19 safety precautions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):
- Wear a mask over your nose and mouth to protect yourself and others.
- Limit celebrations to small gatherings.
- If you feel sick, stay home from work and Thanksgiving festivities.
- Stay at least 6 feet away – about 2 arm lengths as demonstrated in the video by Jacobs – from other people.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds and use hand sanitizer regularly.
“This holiday, let’s not only give thanks for good health – let’s help protect and promote it for all of Knoxville,” Kincannon says in the video. “Follow these simple precautions to enjoy a happy and healthy Thanksgiving.”
The alliance also advises that it’s not too late to get a flu shot, and everyone should receive the vaccine to help protect yourself, loved ones and the community from illness and potential added complications from a COVID-19 infection while suffering or recovering from the flu.
In addition to Kincannon, Jacobs, Plowman and Briggs, Knoxville Recovers also includes Randy Boyd, University of Tennessee System president; Bill Haslam, former Tennessee governor and Knoxville mayor; Dr. Keith Gray, University of Tennessee Medical Center’s chief medical officer; Karmen Jones, UT-Knoxville’s Student Government Association president; Phyllis Y. Nichols, president and CEO of the Knoxville Area Urban League; Renee Kelly, Knox County Schools chief of staff; and Mike Odom, president and CEO of the Knoxville Chamber.
