February 16, 2017

The Knoxville Area Urban League recently hosted its annual membership meeting at the Knoxville Convention Center. The yearly gathering served to celebrate accomplishments in 2016, as well as outline plans for 2017.

In 2016, the Knoxville Area Urban League focused considerable resources on education and youth-oriented programs. The organization distributed 1,200 books to preschool and elementary school aged children, as well as provided school supplies and shoes to more than 1,400 area children.

“We are very proud of our impact numbers for 2016,” said Phyllis Y. Nichols, president and CEO of the Knoxville Area Urban League. “As we reflect on 2016, I want to point out how we made our community a better place for everyone, and we look forward to empowering our clients in 2017.”

In addition to education, the Knoxville Area Urban League provided comprehensive housing and counseling services to 211 individuals. In addition, the organization made a financial impact of $8.7 million through new home purchases and maintenance of homeownership.

In order to promote business and economic development in Knoxville communities, the organization devoted 405 hours to serving entrepreneurs, closed five loans for a total of $183,000 and raised $100,000 in investments for the organization’s loan program.
