KCDC Purchasing Manager Terry McKee (right) accepts the “Spirit of the NIGP” Award from the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing’s (NIGP) Board President Marcheta E. Gillespie at the organization’s annual forum in Orlando, Fla. The “Spirit of the NIGP” is a national award given to three exemplary purchasing professionals each year.

Knoxville’s Community Development Corporation (KCDC) and KCDC Purchasing Manager Terry McKee were recently honored by the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing (NIGP) at the organization’s 69th Annual Forum in Orlando, Fla.

McKee was presented with the “Spirit of the NIGP,” an award given to exemplary public purchasing professionals who have played a significant role in shaping the organization. Each year, the NIGP chooses three professionals from across the country who demonstrate leadership, service, and dedication to the purchasing profession to receive the “Spirit of the NIGP” award.

“This award is given to the unsung heroes of the profession,” said KCDC Executive Director and CEO Alvin Nance. “Here at KCDC, we already recognize Terry’s excellent work and the role that he plays in shaping our organization. We are very glad to see that he is also receiving well-deserved recognition outside of our agency.”

At the August KCDC Board meeting, KCDC Commissioner Ellen Adcock added, “I don’t think people realize how much is involved in purchasing and the importance of maintaining ethical policies. I was a member of the NIGP years ago, and I remember. It’s a great honor, and congratulations to Terry.”

At the annual forum on Aug. 25, KCDC was also honored with the Outstanding Accreditation Award, one of three organizations in the state to have this distinction. Outstanding Accreditation is given to organizations that lead the industry in procurement policy and demonstrate the implementation of best practices.

“We are very honored that KCDC’s procurement practices have been recognized nationally,” said Nance. “Thanks to our staff here at KCDC and especially to Terry McKee and his team for their diligence and hard work.”

The agency’s reaccreditation from the organization is effective for the next three years. KCDC has been an accredited member of the NIGP since 2010.
