ArtCateheadshot300Art Cate, chief operating officer at Knoxville’s Community Development Corporation (KCDC), was recently elected president of the North Knoxville Business & Professional Association at the organization’s monthly meeting. The year-long term begins in January 2014.

Other officers elected during the September meeting were Larry Cox, owner of Homestead, Inc./Chicken City, as vice president; Paige McDaniel, marketing coordinator at Rodefer, Moss & Company, as treasurer; and Becky Dodson, vice president of Tennova Healthcare, as secretary. Houston Smelcer, senior director of development at Helen Ross McNabb Center, will become the immediate past president.

The North Knoxville Business & Professional Association was established in June of 2003 as a nonprofit group of business and community leaders primarily located in the 37917 Zip code. KCDC was a charter member of the group, which has since grown to have an average of 45 meeting attendees, a dedicated membership of more than 100 businesses and an active board of directors.

“KCDC is honored to be a part of this great group of businesses and professionals,” said KCDC Executive Director and CEO Alvin Nance. “Our neighboring businesses and organizations continue to help North Knoxville thrive and grow in its unique identity. I am proud of Art and the North Knoxville Business and Professional Association for being a significant part of making that happen.”

The association holds a monthly breakfast meeting – sponsored by different members at their places of business – to network and listen to speakers on a variety of topics.

The North Knoxville Business & Professional Association promotes business and community improvement by focusing on development of new and existing businesses, cultivating professional relationships and supporting area nonprofits serving North Knoxville. The organization also supports North Knoxville schools by recognizing exceptional students through a Student-of-the-Month program and providing scholarships through the Fulton High School Alumni Association.

In 2012, the organization provided more than $4,000 in scholarships and more than $2,000 in financial support of local nonprofits.

Cate has been a member of the North Knoxville Business & Professional Association since its founding in 2003. He has worked at KCDC for more than 30 years and has been COO since 2001.
