Craig Griffith was honored recently for 10 years of service on the Knoxville’s Community Development Corporation’s (KCDC) Board of Commissioners as he completed his term in March. KCDC Executive Director and CEO Alvin Nance and fellow commissioners presented a commemorative plague and special gift to show their appreciation at Griffith’s last meeting on March 28.
“Craig has been a pillar of the KCDC board for the past 10 years, displaying expert guidance and judgment,” said Nance. “We appreciate his service in continuing to better KCDC’s service to the community, and his legacy will live on in the decisions and advice he contributed during his tenure.”
Griffith was first appointed to the KCDC Board of Commissioners in 2003 by Knoxville Mayor Victor Ashe. He was reappointed by both Mayor Bill Haslam and Mayor Madeline Rogero. He previously served as chairman of the board from 2007 to 2009.
“He’s a real asset to KCDC, and we want to recognize that,” said KCDC Board of Commissioners Chairman Culver Schmid.
“I wish I could participate in a fraction of the amount of work that Craig has done for KCDC,” said KCDC Board of Commissioners Vice Chairman David Hutchins. “It lends an agency extra legitimacy when a board member participates on the state and national level like Craig has.”
Griffith served as a KCDC representative at state and national public housing conferences and was vice president of commissioners for the Southeastern Regional Council of Housing and Redevelopment Professionals (SERC) at the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) from 2009 to 2011. He was instrumental in establishing SERC/NAHRO’s Commissioner of the Year award.
“I’ve gotten to know the staff and our great residents that I’ve been honored to serve,” said Griffith. “What I’ve learned at the state and national level is that a lot of what we do here at KCDC is really on the cutting-edge of affordable housing. So keep up the good work!”
Griffith previously served as the public affairs director for the city of Knoxville and deputy to the mayor from 2000 to 2003.
KCDC’s Board of Commissioners oversees programs provided by the corporation, including affordable public housing administration, redevelopment and rental assistance programs. Other members of the board are chairman Culver Schmid, a shareholder with Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, PC; vice chairman David Hutchins, architect and president of Hutchins Associates PC.; Ellen Adcock, community volunteer and former director of the City of Knoxville Department of Administration; Lisa Wagoner, supervisor of health services for Knox County Schools; and resident commissioner Phyllis Patrick, administrative assistant for Evergreen Presbyterian Ministries.
