Johnson Architecture project The Showroom at Five Points earns Keep Blount Beautiful award
The Showroom at Five Points, designed by Johnson Architecture, has earned a 2019 Keep Blount Beautiful BRAVO! Award for the redesign and reuse of the historic structure. The winners were announced June 6 at a luncheon in Maryville.
To bring the dream of repurposing the space to reality, the owners, Copper Cellar Family of Restaurants, collaborated with longtime partner Johnson Architecture to creatively redesign the existing building and incorporate it with two other adjacent structures.
“Giving this property new life while respecting its history was a fun challenge,” said Daryl Johnson, founder and president of Johnson Architecture. “The Showroom is now a focal point in the Maryville community. We appreciate this recognition for the finished product by Keep Blount Beautiful.”
The Keep Blount Beautiful BRAVO! Awards are given annually to recognize local businesses and organizations for landscaping and beautification efforts; reuse and redesign of existing structures; and the sustainable stewardship of properties in Blount County.
Originally built as a showroom for an automobile dealer in the 1930s, the space has been home to a host of businesses. The current renovation included a redesign of the existing building and two other structures, resulting in an 11,500-square-foot facility that includes a 5,000-square-foot event space for weddings, corporate events and special functions.
Aptly named The Showroom at Five Points, it pays homage to the building’s history and location just north of Maryville’s historic Five Points intersection at 1529 E. Broadway.
Sandblasting of the showroom’s original bowstring trusses, wood barrel ceiling and interior brick revealed the original beauty. The exterior brick was restored and enhanced with original salvaged windows. Additions included new restrooms and a catering kitchen, as well as a vintage Art Deco bar salvaged from a speakeasy in Atlanta.
