Free concert features tunes from ‘Les Miserables,’ Gershwin and Sousa

A springtime tradition returns to downtown Knoxville as Home Federal Bank presents Symphony on the Square, a free concert by the Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra.

The concert, which is free, family-friendly, and open to the public, takes place on the Bill Lyons Pavilion stage on Market Square Thursday, May 9, at 7:30 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held at the Bijou Theatre.

“Home Federal Bank is always glad to support the arts and our community, especially this close to our home,” said Home Federal Bank President Dale Keasling. “Symphony on the Square brings an evening of beautiful music virtually outside the front door of our headquarters in downtown Knoxville. It’s an excellent opportunity for individuals and families to enjoy free, quality entertainment and also all that downtown Knoxville has to offer.”

This year’s Symphony on the Square will feature light classics and pop tunes such George Gershwin’s “Lullaby,” Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer,” a medley from “Les Miserables,” and John Philip Sousa’s “Washington Post March.”

The concert is part of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra’s outreach efforts that include performances in non-traditional places like hospitals, school classrooms, nursing homes, city parks and churches.

Patrons are encouraged to arrive early and bring blankets and/or chairs to enjoy the concert. Concert goers can also bring picnic dinners or pick up food at one of the many downtown restaurants.

The event is part of the City of Knoxville’s Concerts on the Square series, which provides free concerts in Market Square weekly each Thursday from May 2 through June 27.
