Free concert of gospel, spirituals and opera features 40-voice choir

Locally owned Home Federal Bank continues its tradition of community support as the presenting sponsor of “Knoxville Opera Goes to Church … A Celebration of Talent!”

The concert, a mix of opera and gospel performed by local artists, is a celebration of music, the performing arts and talent. The event is free to the public and will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, at 5 p.m. at Greater Warner Tabernacle A.M.E. Zion Church, 3800 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave.

“Knoxville Opera Goes to Church is a wonderful celebration that continually draws a packed house of enthusiastic music lovers,” Home Federal Bank President Dale Keasling said. “Home Federal Bank gladly sponsors this concert that has become a beloved annual tradition for so many people in our community.”

Music Director Jeanie Turner Melton and Knoxville Opera Maestro Brian Salesky will conduct the 40-voice Knoxville Opera Gospel Choir. The Knoxville Opera is the only opera company in the world to have its own gospel choir.

“The Knoxville Opera is proud to have this showcase for our gospel choir and our talented guest artists,” Salesky said. “And we appreciate Home Federal Bank’s continued support so that we can present this concert for free to the community.”

Program selections include “O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing,” “You Must Have That True Religion,” “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child,” “Lord, I Don’t Feel Noways Tired,” “Hallelujah is the Highest Praise,” “Move on up a Little Higher,” “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother,” “Even Me,” Amazing Grace,” “Walk with Me, Lord” and excerpts from Bizet’s “Carmen.”

Concert soloists include Knoxville Opera guest artists Audrey Babcock, Brian Cheney and Ryan Kuster, along with Briana Hunter, Evelyn Jack and Sonia Roberts.

The popular concert is part of the Knoxville Opera’s more than 75 outreach activities each year.
