Home Federal Bank named Theresa Kropinak a 2014 Hometown Hero and presented a check for $2,500 in her name to YWCA Knoxville at a ceremony at the Home Federal Bank downtown Knoxville headquarters on Tuesday, April 29.

In its fourth year, the Hometown Heroes program spotlights ordinary people who do extraordinary things for others and their community. Eight winners were selected for their extraordinary volunteer work based on nominations from area nonprofits and the general public.

A $2,500 donation is made in each honoree’s name to the nonprofit of his or her choice, and an overall winner of the eight finalists will have an additional $2,500 donation made in his or her name.

“This is the fourth year of the Hometown Heroes community service awards program, and I continue to be amazed at the tremendous work being done by dedicated volunteers who quietly serve in so many ways,” Home Federal Bank President Dale Keasling said. “People like Theresa, whose volunteer efforts make life brighter for area women facing life challenges, exemplify what it means to be a Hometown Hero.”

Kropinak is a faithful YWCA Knoxville volunteer who quietly and diligently serves the Y’s 58 residents, all of whom are women working to overcome significant life obstacles. To help ensure that residents look their best, Kropinak organizes and regularly makes donations to Y-Boutique, a program that provides new clothing for residents. A simple but very meaningful gesture, particularly for residents lacking family support, Kropinak decorates the facility lobby and residents’ doors with the changing of the seasons and on major holidays. She also hosts an annual Valentine’s Day banquet for residents.

“Hometown Heroes affords us the opportunity to recognize some commendable individuals,” Keasling said. “Additionally, the program allows us to support many area nonprofits that do a lot of important work in our community.”

YWCA Knoxville CEO Marigail Mullin accepted the donation on behalf of the organization.
