Lori Bertelkamp McKelvy designated her $2,500 award to Thrive Lonsdale, and Executive Director Clayton Wood accepted the funds on behalf of the organization.

Home Federal Bank named Lori Bertelkamp McKelvy a 2014 Hometown Hero and presented a check for $2,500 in her name to Thrive Lonsdale at a ceremony at the Home Federal Bank Bearden branch on Monday, April 28.

In its fourth year, the Hometown Heroes program spotlights ordinary people who do extraordinary things for others and their community. Eight winners were selected for their extraordinary volunteer work based on nominations from area nonprofits and the general public.

A $2,500 donation is made in each honoree’s name to the nonprofit of his or her choice, and an overall winner of the eight finalists will have an additional $2,500 donation made in his or her name.

“This is the fourth year of the Hometown Heroes community service awards program, and I continue to be amazed at the tremendous work being done by dedicated volunteers who quietly serve in so many ways,” Home Federal Bank President Dale Keasling said. “People like Lori, whose volunteer efforts help area elementary school age students reach their full potential, exemplify what it means to be a Hometown Hero.”

McKelvy is reaching Lonsdale children through her passionate volunteer service with Thrive Lonsdale, an after-school care program that works to address the spiritual, emotional and academic deficits that can rob children of their potential. Since she began volunteering with Thrive Lonsdale two years ago, McKelvy has worked on the Christmas program, mentored individual students, tutored students in reading and led weekly sports activities. Her latest project is the creation of a ministry garden in her mother’s honor, which provides Lonsdale students with a safe and beautiful place to play and rest. McKelvy recently moved into a leadership role as a member of the board of directors.

“Hometown Heroes affords us the opportunity to recognize some commendable individuals,” Keasling said. “Additionally, the program allows us to support many area nonprofits that do a lot of important work in our community.”

Thrive Lonsdale Executive Director Clayton Wood accepted the donation on behalf of the organization.
