Give Mom gift of good health, encourage mammograms this Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is a special time to remind Mom how much she means to you. This year on May 8, also take the time to encourage her to protect her health by scheduling a screening mammogram.
“Moms often put family before their own needs,” said Ranee Guard, Summit Medical Group vice president of diagnostic and therapeutic services. “Just as Mother’s Day is a time to thank mothers for those sacrifices, it should be a time to encourage them to make their health and wellness a priority. A mammogram is a critical preventive tool, and we should take as many opportunities as possible to remind women to get screened.”
Mammography is a specialized medical imaging test that uses safe levels of low-radiation X-rays to help detect and evaluate changes in the breasts, which can help to diagnosis breast cancer. The earlier that breast cancer is found, the easier it is to treat successfully.
It’s recommended that women start receiving a screening mammogram annually starting as early as age 40, and each woman should discuss family history and risk factors with her physician to determine a personal health plan.
“A mammogram typically takes just 20 minutes, and it helps save lives,” Guard said. “This Mother’s Day, ask your mom – and other important mothers and women in your life – to give themselves the gift of good health and peace of mind through a mammogram.”
