Gerdau recently awarded local high school student Adelyn Bryson a $10,000 scholarship to attend Maryville College this fall. She is the daughter of James “Woody” Bryson, a 10-year Gerdau employee who works in the factory’s rolling mill.
Gerdau Vice President of Human Resources Carl Czarnik presented the award during an employee luncheon at the company’s Knoxville steel mill on May 15.
Adelyn is currently a senior at Berean Christian School and plans to study nursing. She was selected for the scholarship by an independent panel based on her academic success, volunteer work and extracurricular involvement.
Out of 375 applicants, the panel chose 15 students from across the nation to receive scholarships.
“The selection panel looks at more than just academics,” said Gerdau Vice President and General Manager John Miller. “They look for students with a broader scope of achievements throughout high school who have potential to succeed in the future. We are glad to be a part of Adelyn’s preparation for a successful career.”
