Fausto is the son of Gerdau employee Walter Crapiz (second from right) and wife Nancy, and was selected as one of only 12 students in North America to receive the $10,000 Gerdau Scholarship this year.

Fausto Crapiz, a home-schooled student from Dandridge, Tenn., has been selected to receive a prestigious scholarship offered by Gerdau, one of the largest suppliers of long steel in the world. Crapiz is one of only 12 students to receive the Gerdau Scholarship, which is open to the children of employees at the company’s facilities across North America.

“The selection panel looks at more than just academics,” Gerdau Vice President and General Manager John Miller said. “They look for students with a broader scope of achievements who have potential to succeed in the future. We are glad to be a part of Fausto’s preparation for a successful career.”

Crapiz was honored during a celebration at the Knoxville steel mill on Tuesday, June 9, where Miller presented the scholarship award. Walter Crapiz, Fausto’s father, has worked in the engineering department at the mill since 1999.

Fausto has been accepted as a University Honors Scholar at East Tennessee State University, where he will study anthropology and pre-med beginning in the fall. He volunteers at a local, free-to-the-public dental clinic, is a member of his church choir and is a talented musician who participates in various symphonic musical groups. Fausto also is a road cycling enthusiast and Tennessee Bicycle Racing Association Road Race champion.

Gerdau Scholarship recipients are awarded a $2,500 annual stipend towards their undergraduate degrees for up to four years and a total of $10,000. Selection is based on standardized testing scores, academic performance and contributions to their schools and communities. Candidates are required to submit an essay outlining their personal characteristics, activities, plans and goals.

The Gerdau Scholarship program is designed to promote Gerdau’s commitment to education, one of the pillars of the company’s social responsibility program. Other pillars of this program include quality of management and community support.
