Gilbert serves as a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and American Gastroenterological Association. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in both internal medicine and his primary specialty, gastroenterology.

“Dr. Gilbert’s expertise and leadership in the study of gastroenterology, coupled with his longstanding service in East Tennessee, makes him a strong addition to the physicians at GIA,” said Jeff Dew, CEO of Gastrointestinal Associates. “He shares our team’s commitment to the highest quality of care for our patients.”

Prior to joining GIA, Gilbert served for six years as a physician at Oak Ridge Gastroenterology Associates in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where his clinical interests included gallbladder and bile duct disorders, cirrhosis and liver disorders, and colon cancer prevention.

Gilbert previously served as an assistant professor in the Division of Digestive Diseases & Nutrition at the University of Kentucky.

After earning his undergraduate degree at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Gilbert completed his medical doctorate degree at the UT College of Medicine in Memphis. He then completed his internal medicine residency at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and his gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Kentucky, where he was chief gastroenterology fellow for the 2007-08 academic year.

Gilbert’s advanced procedural skills include endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), spyglass cholangioscopy, capsule endoscopy and enteroscopy.

Gilbert is active in the community and serves as a reserve elder and Sunday school teacher at First Presbyterian Church of Knoxville. He lives in the Hardin Valley community of West Knoxville with his wife, Amy Gilbert, and their three children, Anna Grace, Lucy and James.
