Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon is accepting proposals for its Community Contribution Program, which will award funds for healthy living initiatives in East Tennessee. The deadline for the grant program, now in its second year, is July 31.

“We are delighted to bring back the grant program in order to support healthy living beyond the finish line,” said Jason Altman, race director for the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon. “It is rewarding to know what happens during race weekend will continue to make an impact throughout the year.

“The Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon weekend is about fitness and improved health, and the Community Contribution Program is another component of those goals.”

Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon is East Tennessee’s premier event for runners, and along with the Knoxville Track Club, the event has made great strides in encouraging activity and exercise for people of all ages and abilities throughout the community. The funds designated for the Community Contribution Program provide additional opportunities to support regional projects and charities that promote healthy living.

Application forms are available at www.knoxvillemarathon.com. Projects should represent unique ideas, methods and approaches that utilize physical fitness activities to:

  • Improve quality of life in the community
  • Promote healthy living practices
  • Promote healthy eating habits in relation to physical activity
  • Support current programs promoting physical activity (i.e. supplies, equipment, materials or other similar items)
  • A combination of all of the above

Eligible applicants include nonprofits with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status and regional government entities that are considered nonprofit and serve Knox County and/or one of its eight contiguous counties: Anderson, Blount, Grainger, Jefferson, Loudon, Roane, Sevier and Union.

Applicants may submit proposals up to $10,000, and multiple recipients may be selected. Proposals must be submitted by July 31, and the award date will be no later than September 30, 2015.

From 2005 to 2014, Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon and Knoxville Track Club have reinvested $113,350 into community projects with an additional $17,831 contributed toward Covenant Health’s Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center Innovative Recreation Cooperative, which encourages people with disabilities to pursue leisure and sports activities, including hand-cycling, which is one of the races in the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon.

In addition to the Community Contribution Program, proceeds from the marathon continue to benefit the Knoxville Track Club’s youth athletics program and Patricia Neal’s Innovative Recreation Cooperative, as well as supporting additional charity sponsors, Variety’s Katerpillar Kids Camp and Thompson Cancer Survival Center Foundation.
