Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon now accepting proposals for ‘Healthy Living’ grants

June 8, 2016

Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon is currently accepting proposals for its Community Contribution Program, which will award funds for healthy living initiatives in East Tennessee. The deadline for the proposals is August 1, 2016.

Eligible applicants include nonprofits with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status and regional government entities that are considered nonprofit and serve Knox County and/or one of its eight contiguous counties: Anderson, Blount, Grainger, Jefferson, Loudon, Roane, Sevier and Union.

“We are very pleased with the success of this grant program, which is now in its third year,” said Jason Altman, race director for the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon. “Based on the many strong proposals we receive each year, it’s evident our area nonprofits are working hard to positively impact our region’s health and fitness.”

Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon is East Tennessee’s premier event for runners, and along with the Knoxville Track Club, the event has made great strides in encouraging activity and exercise for people of all ages and abilities throughout the community. The funds designated for the Community Contribution Program provide additional opportunities to support regional projects and charities that promote healthy living.

Application forms are available at www.knoxvillemarathon.com. Projects should represent unique ideas, methods and approaches that utilize physical fitness activities to:

  • Improve quality of life in the community
  • Promote healthy living practices
  • Promote healthy eating habits in relation to physical activity
  • Support current programs promoting physical activity (i.e. supplies, equipment, materials or other similar items)
  • A combination of all of the above

Applicants may submit proposals up to $10,000, and multiple recipients may be selected. Proposals must be submitted by Monday, August 1. The award date will be no later than September 30, 2016.

As part of the race’s 2015 Community Contribution Program, Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon presented a total of more than $15,000 in healthy living grants to the Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum, The Muse Knoxville, Girls on the Run of Greater Knoxville and Knoxville Recreational Therapy Program.

In addition to the Community Contribution Program, the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon and the Knoxville Track Club have a longstanding history of reinvesting in the community. From 2005 to 2015, they’ve contributed $125,650 to support projects such as mile markers for local city and county greenways, land acquisition and building trails in South Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness and a golf cart to help those patrolling and cleaning area greenways.

An additional $22,931 has been given to the Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center Innovative Recreation Cooperative, which encourages people with disabilities to pursue leisure and sports activities including hand cycling, which is one of the races in the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon.
