Wojciech Kopec of Searcy, Ark., won the ninth annual Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon on Sunday, April 7. In a field of about 7,500 participants in six races, Kopec finished the 26.2-mile men’s full marathon with a time of 2:22:15.

Edward Tabut of Coon Rapids, Minn., came in second at 2:25:09. Bryan Morseman of Addison, N.Y., was third with a time of 2:28:47

In the women’s category, the top spot went to Courtney Cooper of Boone, N.C. Her time was 3:01:50. Kathy Wolski of Knoxville, Tenn., came in second at 3:02:38, and Tammy Slusser came in third at 3:08:54.

In the men’s half-marathon, first-place winner, Patrick Cheptoek of Bowling Green, K.Y., finished the course at 1:06:44. Boniface Biwott of Kentucky was second with a time of 1:07:50. Third place for the men was Darren Brown of Knoxville who finished at 1:08:27. Mike Freemont, 91, who holds several national and international marathon age records, finished the half-marathon in 3:03:56.

In the women’s half-marathon, Shitaye Gemechu of Kentucky took the top spot with a time of 1:17:39. Elizabeth Herndon of Knoxville finished second at 1:21:30. Kacey Nobert of Knoxville finished third at 1:25:23.

In the men’s 5K run, Chris Kane of Knoxville took first with a time of 19:01. Michael Sia of Morristown, Tenn., finished second at 19:11, and Carter Coughlin of Knoxville, finished third at 19:19.

Kristen Rider of Knoxville won the women’s 5K with a time of 21:06. Angela Shreve of Powell, Tenn., took second place at 21:08, and Shelley Rabie of Tazewell, Tenn., took third place at 21:35.

The field also included three hand-cyclists. Dennis Clark of Oliver Springs, Tenn., finished the full marathon with a time of 2:06:31. Carly Pearson of Knoxville finished at 2:19:51 and Thomas Kahler of Clinton, Tenn., came in at 2:22:49.

Three wheelchair athletes, the 50 Ability Marathon Team, completed the full marathon on rim cycles. The marathon part of an effort to complete 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 weeks. Grant Berthiaume of Tucson, Ariz. came in at 2:30:21. Aaron Roux of Tucson, came in at 3:18:57 and Paul Erway of Knoxville, finished in 3:43:20

The Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon also offered two- and four-person marathon relays as well as the one-mile Covenant Kids Run.

The Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon is a premier event organized by the Knoxville Track Club, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the encouragement of physical well being through running, jogging, competitive road racing, racewalking, fun runs, cross-country and track and field.
