Concerts on Cumberland series continues with Orison at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral

November 27, 2018

The Concerts on Cumberland series continues Sunday, Dec. 2, when Orison, a Knoxville-based vocal group, will perform an uplifting and meditative Compline service at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral.

The performance includes adaptations of the daily sequence of prayers that monastic communities have observed for over a thousand years, as well as techniques of Renaissance polyphony. The 45-minute experience invites the audience into a reflective space of candlelight and incense, and those present can listen, meditate and absorb the mystical beauty.

The concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m., is free to attend. Free parking is available adjacent to the cathedral, located at 413 Cumberland Ave., in downtown Knoxville.

The unique program takes place by candlelight, creating an atmosphere of mystical beauty in the cathedral.

“Orison’s Compline service is a beautiful and moving experience, and we look forward to sharing it with the community,” said John C. Ross, dean of St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral. “This is a great way to center yourself in this busy holiday season, and we invite everyone to come, listen and enjoy.”

Compline consists of chanted prayers, petitions, psalms and anthems. Orison’s interpretation of Compline is inspired by the ancient Sarum tradition of the Salisbury Cathedral in England.

Concerts on Cumberland also will feature an upcoming free concert by Echoing Air on March 8, 2019, and ticketed collaborations with Big Ears Festival (March 21-24, 2019) and Marble City Opera (May 30-June 1, 2019). The concerts are part of the cathedral’s larger music series called Chords for the Community.
