Concerts on Cumberland series continues with Echoing Air at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral

March 7, 2019

The Concerts on Cumberland series continues Friday, March 8, when Echoing Air, an elegant baroque group, will perform at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral.

Echoing Air features two world-renowned countertenors in its six-piece, dynamic ensemble. The group specializes in the repertoire of the English Baroque, with an emphasis on chamber works featuring countertenor voices with baroque ensemble.

The concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m., is free to attend. Free parking is available adjacent to the cathedral, located at 413 Cumberland Ave., in downtown Knoxville.

Echoing Air, an elegant baroque group, will perform at St. John’s Cathedral.

“We’re excited to have Echoing Air back in our cathedral for another moving performance,” said John C. Ross, dean of St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral. “It’s been a treat to share this entire music series with the community. We invite everyone to come, listen and enjoy this unique experience with these talented and renowned musicians.”

The program will include lute songs and consort music from the 17th and early 18th centuries with an emphasis on the music of Henry Purcell. In addition to Purcell and other English composers, music from across the European continent will broaden the musical horizon, including works by Monteverdi, Marais and Schütz. The selections will alternate between solo airs, duets, instrumental sonatas and works for the full consort.

Upcoming Concerts on Cumberland events will feature ticketed collaborations with Big Ears Festival (March 21-24, 2019) and Marble City Opera (May 30-June 1, 2019). The concerts are part of the cathedral’s larger music series called Chords for the Community.
