The Board of Commissioners for Knoxville’s Community Development Corporation (KCDC) voted today at its October meeting to appoint Brad Peters as vice president of redevelopment and legal services.
Peters will be charged with working alongside the City of Knoxville and other partners to assist with redevelopment and affordable housing projects through project management and legal services.
“Brad will be a great addition to our team at KCDC and will be a tremendous asset in helping us advance redevelopment initiatives throughout our city,” KCDC Executive Director Art Cate said. “With his background in project management and law, Brad’s skills will enhance our abilities to manage several key current redevelopment projects in downtown and surrounding neighborhoods.”
KCDC Board Chairman Dan Murphy said, “As housing agencies navigate changing national funding models, having a legal specialist on the KCDC team is especially important. The board looks forward to having access to his legal advice and project management expertise to help guide our ongoing and future redevelopment projects.”
Peters joins KCDC after spending the last three years in Asia, where he taught business law and corporate governance to university students; studied Mandarin Chinese; and pursued mission work with the urban poor. Through his experiences in some of the largest cities in the world, he witnessed firsthand the need for affordable housing.
“I am excited to work at KCDC because I believe strongly in its mission to provide affordable housing to those who need it,” Peters said. “It’s a unique opportunity to work with the city in an effort to transform our neighborhoods and improve affordable housing in an ever-changing industry. With new federal programs, additional tools are available to help fund these improvements.”
Peters began his career in 2002 as a real estate associate at the international law firm, Hunton & Williams, and specialized in large business transactions. In 2005, he joined the Tennessee Valley Authority as an attorney and was promoted to senior manager in 2008. Peters led a team of 19 employees in drafting and administering TVA’s $11 billion in electric power contracts and many of TVA’s renewable power contracts. Both his experience in real estate law and project management will enhance his work at KCDC.
Peters graduated from the University of Missouri with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics and earned a law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law. He also holds a master’s degree in strategic management from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.
Peters lives in West Knoxville with his wife, Heather; son, Dalton, 12; and daughter, Lauren, 10. Peters will begin his new position Nov. 2.
