Asbury Place retirement communities recently named Carolyn Neil health care administrator for its Maryville campus and regional director of clinical services for Asbury Place Tennessee.

Neil is a registered nurse and licensed nursing home administrator with a 28-year career leading health care teams and organizations. She also is the founder, president and chief executive officer of Elder Advocates, a company that guides elders and their families and caregivers through the most difficult stages of life.

“Carolyn has a reputation throughout East Tennessee as a passionate and effective advocate and tireless champion for aging services, a reputation well earned through a career devoted to making life better for seniors and those who love them,” said Marjorie Shonnard, chief operating officer for Asbury Inc. “With her extensive clinical and administrative knowledge, as well as a devotion to our industry, Carolyn is a tremendous asset to Asbury Place.”

Throughout a career that includes 17 years with the University of Tennessee Medical Center and service as COO and CEO of Hillcrest Healthcare, Neil has led departments with as few as 10 employees to companies with 700 employees. She most recently served as interim nursing home administrator for Asbury Place Kingsport.

Earlier this year Neil was instrumental in launching Purple Cities Alliance, a public and private coalition of organizations raising awareness about dementia and helping those with the disease feel safer and better cared for in the community. She now serves on the organization’s advisory board. Neil also serves on the board of directors of LeadingAge Tennessee and volunteers with the Case Management Society of America (CMSA) and Tennessee Valley Chapter of CMSA; Knoxville Senior Resource Network; Blount County Senior Resource Network; and East Knoxville Business & Professional Association.

Neil and her husband, Rodney, live on the Holston River and have two sons, two daughters and three grandchildren. She holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a master’s degree in public health, health planning administration. She also has completed advanced coursework in dementia studies with Johns Hopkins University.
