Asbury Place Maryville held its third annual “Celebrate Life Week” with a host of activities and contests that culminated Friday with a parade, party and cookout.

The week originated as a way to thank associates, residents and guests for their involvement in making Asbury Place an ideal retirement community. Asbury Place every day celebrates the lives of its residents and provides for their physical, intellectual, spiritual and social needs, and this special week honors the relationship between its associates and residents.

“This celebration puts a well-deserved spotlight on everyone at our Maryville campus,” said Carolyn Neil, regional director of clinical services for Asbury Place and administrator of Asbury Place Maryville. “The people who work and live at Asbury Place enjoy being part of a close-knit community. The entire week is about the enrichment of our residents’ lives and the daily dedication of our associates.”

The theme for the 2015 event was “Camp Week” and included friendly competitions and activities that related going to summer camp. Suzanne Ulino, staff development coordinator at Asbury Place, said camaraderie and familiarity are the primary benefits of Celebrate Life Week.

“For the associates it’s team-building and getting more familiar with associates working at other locations on our campus,” Ulino said. “For residents, they get to be involved with having so much fun with our associates through the daily themed activities and competitions.”

Everyone was invited to participate based on interests and ability with residents also serving as judges for various contests. The week included western and nautical themes, and residents competed to see which teams could write the best fill-in-the-blank letter home from summer camp.

Since various teams were formed across campus, the week encouraged interaction among associates and residents in independent and assisted living areas and at the campus’ health care center. The week even included a spirited game of “Capture the Flag,” in which residents tried to swipe rival teams’ flags from their buildings.

The week ended Friday with a parade, awards celebration, carnival games, watermelon and pie-eating contests and cookout. The parade included the participants in uniform with their team flags on display.

“The residents get so involved in the events,” Ulino said. “They get so much out of it. When they see the associates laughing and having fun and all the smiles on their faces, that’s it right there. That’s why we do this. We all benefit so much from this week.”
