Centerpiece of $1.4 million campus enhancement to provide expanded wellness and fitness center

Today, Asbury Place Kingsport officially broke ground on its clubhouse, the centerpiece of a $1.4 million campus enhancement. Construction is expected to be completed in summer 2016.

“This is a special day in the life of Asbury Place Kingsport,” said Sandra Brown, executive director of the Kingsport campus. “By offering residents a beautiful gathering space and expanded wellness and fitness center, the new clubhouse and other campus upgrades are examples of our continued focus on fulfilling residents’ physical, intellectual, spiritual and social needs.”

Kingsport Mayor John Clark was on hand to celebrate the groundbreaking. He commended Asbury Place for making a significant investment in the well-being of the community’s seniors.

Maggie Cooper, Asbury Place director of lifestyles and wellness, foresees the clubhouse as an excellent way to encourage even more residents to be active. “We have a lot of people regularly participating in our exercise classes,” Cooper said. “With an entire floor of the new clubhouse dedicated to fitness, we hope even more will make exercise part of their daily routine.”

For example, Cooper leads classes in strength, balance and cardio, and yoga. She also has classes that target senior-specific areas such as fall prevention, brain health and memory enhancement.

Annette Pannell has lived at Asbury Place Kingsport three years. The lively senior still drives, participates in garden and bridge clubs off-campus and attends on-campus exercise classes four mornings per week.

Pannell believes the addition of the clubhouse will enhance the campus and might even attract more residents to Asbury Place.

“It’s going to be great,” Pannell said. “As I often tell my friends and family, I love living at Asbury Place. I look forward to the new neighbors that this clubhouse will attract.”

Dr. Warren Smith, a retired Kingsport family practitioner who now serves as president of the campus’ Baysmont Resident Association, knows there is a big benefit when seniors exercise and stay active.

“I love living here and particularly like the many activities offered, such as the exercise programs and excursions,” Smith said.
