300 YOUTH ORCHESTRA STUDENTS PERFORM KSYO WINTER CONERTS INCLUDING COMPETITION WINNERS

The Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Association (KSYOA) will present TWO winter concerts on Sunday, Feb. 22 at the Tennessee Theatre, featuring all five youth orchestras and the winners of the 2014-15 Concerto Competition. These concerts are sponsored by Scripps Networks Interactive.

  1. The KSYO Winter Concert will take place at 4:30 pm. featuring Preludium, Philharmonia, Sinfonia and Youth Chamber Orchestras. Each Orchestra will perform 6-10 minutes of music under their respective conductor.
  2. The top Youth Orchestra conducted by James Fellenbaum will perform at 7:00 pm featuring the Concerto Competition winners Autumn Arsenault, piano and Jerry Zhou, cello. The Youth Orchestra will perform Alexander Borodin’s Symphony No. 2 in B minor, the first time the students will perform an entire four-movement orchestral work.

Autumn Arsenault is an 8th grader at Temple Baptist Academy. She has played violin in the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Association for the past eight years, including her position as concertmaster of The Sinfonia Orchestra in 2011-2012.  Autumn began her piano training at age five and is currently a student of Meiling Martin; she also participates in masterclasses with Fay Adams. Autumn has participated in Knoxville Music Teachers Association for two years and has achieved ‘Superior’ both years. She also competed in TAACS District and State Fine Arts Competition on violin, piano, voice, and speech placing first in each category. She won the Tennessee Valley Fair Junior Talent Competition for two years.

Jerry Zhou

Jerry Zhou

Jerry Zhou is a sophomore at Farragut High School and has been a part of the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Association for four years. In 2011, he was principal cellist of Philharmonia Orchestra. In 2012, he was principal cellist of Sinfonia Orchestra. In 2014, he became co-principal of the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra. He began his musical journey as a pianist at the age of six under Dr. David Brunell, Professor of Music at the University of Tennessee. Jerry transitioned to cello in the seventh grade to pursue his love for the instrument. Since 2010, He has studied cello under Dr. Wesley Baldwin, Professor of Music at the University of Tennessee. Jerry was principal cellist of the Knox County Honors Orchestra and was a finalist in the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition in 2013. In 2014, Jerry won runner-up in the Tennessee Cello Workshop Junior High State Competition where he competed against cellists from across the nation. In 2013 and 2014, Jerry was a winner of the Oak Ridge Youth Aliyah Music Competition.
