US Nitrogen presented the City of Greeneville Fire Department with a check for $50,000 on Dec. 16 to construct a five-story training facility that will simulate fire and rescue emergencies faced by local and regional personnel.

The fire training facility, located adjacent to Greeneville Light and Power Operations Center, will be constructed with stacked steel storage containers and will include steps, cage ladders and metal grading at the top to allow for rappelling training. The five-story structure will simulate rescue scenarios in multistory residential or commercial facilities.

“US Nitrogen has a great partnership with the Greeneville Fire Department, which conducts safety training with our employees,” US Nitrogen Plant Manager Justin Freeark said. “Through working with the department, we became aware of their need for a practical skills training facility. This new facility will provide opportunities for specialized skills training for local and regional fire departments, as well as benefit our employees and other local industry with better access to emergency response training.”

US Nitrogen’s monetary donation will go towards the construction of the facility and necessary training equipment. US Nitrogen also will provide the used storage containers from its plant worksite.

“The new fire and rescue training center will significantly impact the level of training we are able to do at our facility,” Greeneville Fire Chief Mark Foulks said. “We can conduct live burn, confined space and rescue training and other practical skills training right here in Greeneville.”

The Greeneville Fire Department is a member of the Northeast Tennessee Regional Fire Training Association, which represents Johnson City, Bristol, Kingsport, Elizabethton, Jonesborough, Newport, Morristown, Jefferson City, Cocke County and Tennessee Eastman. The Greeneville facility will be able to host basic firefighting training classes for cadets and ongoing practical skills training for region members. The facility also will be available for private companies, such as US Nitrogen, to conduct emergency response and rescue training.

“We extend tremendous thanks to US Nitrogen for investing in this much-needed training facility for our community,” Foulks said. “With their help, local volunteer and municipal fire departments get much greater access to practical training and that provides better fire protection for our region.”

Greeneville Light and Power provided the property for the facility, and construction on the facility is expected to begin in the next few weeks.
