On Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, Knoxville elected Bill Haslam as its first new mayor in 16 years. In 2007, Mayor Haslam won a second term.
When Haslam announced his candidacy for mayor of Knoxville in April 2003, Moxley Carmichael was his public relations firm of choice to create a campaign logo, stationery, direct mail pieces, all types of signage (billboards, yard signs, bumper-stickers, buttons, etc.), advertisements, and the "Bill Haslam for Mayor" Web site. Moxley Carmichael was honored to again be tapped to serve as the Mayor’s public relations firm for his 2007 reelection campaign.
In developing the new campaign logo, Moxley Carmichael wanted to maintain the investment in the original campaign while bringing the message current. In 2003, the message was “It’s Knoxville Time”:
- time to be a leader in economic development
- time to be a leader in strengthening our neighborhoods
- time to revitalize downtown
- time to realize our dreams for what this city can be
In 2007, the message was “Moving Knoxville Forward,” reflecting both achievement and future progress in those key areas.
Elements from the prior logo remain. The color scheme is blue and yellow, chosen because yellow is identified with imagination and enlightenment, and blue evokes strength, trustworthiness and commitment. The arched band of stars continues with an updated look to show growth and movement, indicating the forward progress brought about under Haslam’s tenure as mayor.
For the campaign materials, Moxley Carmichael's graphic designers chose to show Bill Haslam with a panorama of Knoxville's skyline. This echoes Haslam's strong belief that the campaign was not about him, but about making Knoxville a better place to live and work.
