New bicycles and helmets celebrate outstanding 2014-15 attendance

On Friday, May 15, Gerdau presented new bicycles and safety helmets to 11 Lonsdale Elementary School students in recognition of their outstanding attendance during the 2014-15 school year.

The presentation marked the fourth year that the Knoxville steel mill has rewarded Lonsdale students with best attendance with bikes. The company presented the bikes and safety helmets to kindergarteners Leila Nicolas Juan and Juan Mateo Bartolome; first grader Dakari Dickey; second graders Maria Juan Andres and Frankie Pedro Martin; third graders Yareli Perez and Francisco Tomas; fourth graders Alexcia Pappadopolis and Sebastian Miguel Geronimo; and fifth graders Carmen Juan Andres and Gabriel Juan Andres.

“Gerdau is a longtime partner with Lonsdale Elementary, and we remain committed to supporting our neighbor,” said Gerdau Vice President and General Manager Johnny Miller. “Rewarding these kids with new bikes and helmets is special to us because it recognizes the commitment and dedication of these young students and also encourages them to enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle.”

Adam Fritts, Great Schools Partnership community resource coordinator for Lonsdale Elementary School, is a big proponent of the program. “We truly appreciate this generous gift from Gerdau,” said Fritts. “Both our school and Gerdau are parts of the Lonsdale neighborhood, and we are working together to make our community a better place.”
