LOCAL GROUP PURCHASES 38 SUBWAY RESTAURANTS

A partnership made up of members of the Haslam family, W. Dwight Church and John Dell has purchased 38 local Subway restaurants.

Thirty-five of the Subways are in Knox County and three are in Oak Ridge.
James A. Haslam III, one of the partners of newly formed SubSouth LLC, said the group anticipates increasing the number of Subways in the Knoxville area to more than 50.

“Dwight, John and I are very interested in the opportunity to work with Subway to grow the brand and the number of units in East Tennessee,” Haslam said.

Rob Winchester will be in charge of day-to-day operations of SubSouth LLC.

Partner John Dell said the new partners intend for the stores to be active in the community. “A goal of the new group will be to connect these stores to the Knoxville and Oak Ridge communities in ways that have not existed in the past,” Dell said. He said the Subway stores could participate in local events, fundraisers and school programs.

With 29,752 Subway restaurants in 87 countries, Subway is the largest submarine sandwich franchise in the world. Entrepreneur magazine recently named Subway the “number one global franchise opportunity of 2008.” All Subway restaurants are franchises.
Subway is a privately held company headquartered in Milford, Conn. It was founded in 1965 by Fred DeLuca, a 17-year-old college freshman, and family friend Dr. Peter Buck.
